Ukraine’s Historic Cultural Heritage Preserved Through Emergency Red List of Objects.

Ukraine is taking steps to protect its cultural heritage! On 28 June 2022, experts from 11 museums across Ukraine, in collaboration with the International Council of Museums’ (ICOM) Heritage Protection Department, released a comprehensive Emergency Red List of 53 types of objects representing seven categories of cultural heritage. The seven categories include archaeology, books and manuscripts, numismatics, and folk, religious, applied and fine art.

This list represents the diverse cultural heritage of Ukraine, ranging from the Scythians to the Avant-gardes of the 20th century, and highlights the need to protect this heritage from destruction and plundering. The Emergency Red List will be used to raise awareness of the importance of protecting Ukraine’s cultural heritage, and to help ensure that it is not stolen, sold illegally, or otherwise destroyed.

This is an important step in the effort to protect the cultural heritage of Ukraine, and the collaboration between ICOM and the 11 museums is greatly appreciated. It is hoped that the list will help to preserve the rich history of Ukraine for future generations to enjoy.
